Lo spirito ancestrale “Aumakua” è per la tradizione hawaiana il “più perfetto degli animali”: lo squalo.
Il brand Aumakua è il frutto della collaborazione con il Bimini Biological Field Station di Bimini (Bahamas), laboratorio di biologia marina che fa capo all’Università di Miami, conosciuto in tutto il mondo per la propria competenza nell’ambito della ricerca e dello studio sul comportamento degli squali.
L’incontro con il dott.Samuel Gruber, direttore e fondatore del centro e docente di biologia marina all’Università di Miami , ci ha spinti a realizzare un progetto comune di raccolta fondi da investire nella salvaguardia degli squali in zone a rischio di estinzione.
L’idea è stata una linea di polo realizzate con la complicità (e i morsi) di veri squali nelle acque dell’Oceano Atlantico.
Ogni capo, confezionato in Italia, viene spedito alle Bahamas e viene singolarmente morso da squali in mare aperto. Non si tratta dunque di animali in acquari o in cattività. E’ la necessità primaria dell’animale di mangiare che permette questa operazione.
Il tutto viene realizzato nella totale sicurezza per l’animale che viene rifocillato nel suo habitat naturale.
Nasce così la polo Aumakua che dopo essere stata rattoppata a mano con esclusivi tessuti jacquard è pronta per essere indossata.
Non resta che scegliere il colore. Ahimè non il morso.

The ancestral spirit of Aumakua is considered by the hawaiian tradition the most spotless animal. This is the shark.
The Aumakua brand is the result of a longtime partnership with the Bimini Biological Field Station of Bimini (Bahamas), a worldwide known shark’s lab headed by the University of Miami.
After we met Dr.Samuel Gruber, founder and president of the shark’s lab and teacher of marine biology at the University of Miami, we decided to to start a common project to raise money for the shark’s safeguard in proper areas where their extinction’s risk is high.
The idea was to create a shark’s bitten polo collection released getting garments bitten by sharks.
Every polo is made in Italy and it is sent to Bahamas for being individually bitten by sharks. They are not featured in aquariums nor with sharks in captivity.
It’s the primary animal instinct for food to permit this featuring which is safe for the sharks as they are feed in their natural habitat.
Polos are then hand patched with jacquard fabrics and they are ready to be dressed.
Just need to chose the color. Unfortunately not the bite.
